St. Andrew School students and staff shine at race for education and field day

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — St. Andrew School held its annual Race for Education and Field Day May 8, drawing students, staff, families, and community supporters to Memorial Park for a day of fun, competition, and fundraising.

The event began with announcements, a blessing, and a warm-up before students split into age groups for kickball: Pre-K through second grade on Field 1, grades 3-6 on Field 2, and grades 6-8 on Field 3.

At 11 a.m., eighth-graders who won the annual Penny War fundraiser were rewarded with a special race. Students, along with teachers dressed in costumes, competed as the school community cheered on. The Penny War supports the school’s PBIS program and funds the Castle Cart rewards for students earning points for showing “FAITH in Action.”

Following the kickball and Penny War race, students participated in field day activities, including tennis, basketball, soccer, and sidewalk chalk drawing. Pre-K through third-grade students ran the Race for Education first, completing laps around the park with pass scanning to track results. Fourth- through eighth-grade students ran after lunch, each group running for 45 minutes. Several students ran more than 16 laps, and some adults completed over 22 laps.

Top runners were recognized by age group. For Pre-K through third grade, the top boys were Ryker Wetzel, grade 2, and a five-way tie for second place among Johnny Barvir, Reid Batey, Camdyn Martin, Mark Miller, and Samson Moyer. Top girls were Devyn Rock and Hannah Pagliaro, both first grade. For the older students, top boys were Isaac Mohyer, grade 7, and Calvin Krinks, grade 4, while top girls were Reese Batey and Aurelia Burt, both grade 7. Mrs. Moyer, middle school religion teacher, led staff participants with 37 laps.

Through generous community donations, the school raised over $13,000, with prizes awarded to the top three families and the top-performing class. Subway Waynesboro generously donated boxed lunches for all students.

Organizers said the event highlighted both the school’s commitment to education and the value of community involvement. Despite a windy morning, the day concluded with smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of school spirit, marking another successful celebration in the school’s 100th-anniversary year.
