The Hagerstown Flying Boxcars are looking down on the rest of the Atlantic League — for a change.
After wrapping up their third straight series win to open the season, including four of six games last week at Charleston, they sit atop the 10-team standings at 8-4.
The Boxcars, who finished with the worst record in the league each of the last two years, didn’t get their eighth win last season until their 37th game on June 4.
New additions are paying off.
Local native Jared Carr, who starred at Saint James School and Shepherd University, leads the team with a .326 batting average. Robert Brooks is close behind at .324 and ranks second in the league with 14 RBIs. Alex Isola is tied for fifth in the league with three home runs and tied for sixth with 11 RBIs.
On the mound, Alex Mack leads the league in wins with a 3-0 record, and Cole Roland leads the league in saves with two. As a staff, Hagerstown is tied for first in the league in strikeouts (126) and ranks fifth in ERA (5.35).
The Boxcars open a six-game homestand Tuesday against the Long Island Ducks at Meritus Park. Trevor Bauer, who won the 2020 Cy Young Award with the Cincinnati Reds, is expected to start for the Ducks during the series.
