WAYNESBORO – Many sports can be won with brawn, but having a well-trained brain is the name of the game for the Science Olympiad.
Waynesboro competitors had an opportunity to flex that mental muscle at last weekend’s Central Region Science Olympiad, hosted by Millersville University. And flex they did, as the middle and high schools brought home 50 medals across 24 different events.
All of those medals added up to the realization of a team goal: Qualifying for the state tournament, which will be held at PSU Altoona on April 25.
This will be the fifth trip to states for WAMS, which posted five podium finishes, including a second-place showing from the “Scrambler” team of Keagan Kipe and Cassius Weaver. The WASHS team will be making its maiden voyage to the state tourney with a squad that captured third-place finishes in five events. Maycie Bitner earned two of those bronze medals.
According to Waynesboro’s web page, last weekend’s performance was the result of “months of rigorous research, studying, building, and testing.”
Waynesboro now shifts its focus to the state tourney, where it will be among 36 schools in competition.
