The Smithsburg Leopards can officially call themselves state champions.
The boys on Smithsburg’s indoor track and field squad earned that distinction following a brilliant performance at the MPSSAA Class 1A Indoor State Championships. The Leopards, who captured the team title with 48.33 points, were led by Dylan Herbst, who captured first place in the 800 (2:05.22).
North Hagerstown’s Walker Mason captured the state title in the 3A 3,200 (9:38.10), while area girls were highlighted by the efforts of third-place finishes from the Hubs’ Caroline Philp (3,200, 11:31.75) and Smithsburg’s Lilian Hade (pole vault, 10-0).
The wrestling postseason is in full swing in both Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Fairfield’s Caleb Tyler captured the 285-pound championship at the District 3-2A tourney, while Waynesboro’s Steven Howard (3rd at 133) and Chambersburg’s Deakon Snavely (4th at 215) both secured spots at states with their performances at the District 3-3A/South Central Region Championships.
In Maryland, the WCPS Championships saw Smithsburg’s girls run away with the team championship and crown six individual champs in Kendall Crutchfield (110), Emmaleigh Mentzer (115), Rileigh Romberger (120), Bella Cox (130), Samantha Rowe (145), and Samantha Nieman (170). On the boys hardwood, Chambersburg and Greencastle-Antrim are still alive in the district consolation brackets and battling for spots in the PIAA Championships.
