Smithsburg wrestlers make big showing at ‘Wrassle at Castle,’ sports roundup

The Smithburg girls wrestling team was short in number but big in results on Saturday. 

Rileigh Romberger led the way for Leopards, who with only eight wrestlers participating, finished third in the Wrassle at the Castle tournament at Century High School. 

Five Smithsburg wrestlers won medals in the tournament. The Leopards battled for second for much of the 24-team tournament but came up short because of the shortage of participants. 

Romberger won her weight class and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award. 

Samantha Nieman and Bell Cox finishes second overall while Kendall Crutchfield and Emmaleigh Mentzer took third place. 

BOYS BASKETBALL 

Heritage Academy 65, South Hagerstown 62 

Avery Cosley had 17 points and added five assists, while DJ Wade scored 14 on Saturday, but South Hagerstown came up short against Heritage Academy. 

Luke Leisinger had nine points and six rebounds for the Rebels, while Leo Sklencar added 10 rebounds. 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 

Shepherd 74, East Stroudsburg 68 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.– Sophomore Trinity Turner scored a career-high 22 points to lead Shepherd University to an upset win over East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East matchup on Saturday. women’s basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.  

It was the Rams’ fourth win in five games. 

Turner connected on 8-of-11 shots from the floor, including all three of her three pointers, to lead the Rams (7-13, 5-10). 

Junior Kara Wehner added 15 points, a career-high nine assists and tied a career-high seven boards. Sophomore Lamaria Estridge had 10 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Vilte Kacerauskaite added 10 points.  

Brie Droege had 26 points and seven rebounds for the Warriors (14-9, 9-7). 

MEN’S BASKETBALL  

Shepherd 100, East Stroudsburg 95 (2OT) 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Elwyne Wordlaw scored nine of his career-high 28 points in the second overtime to lead Shepherd University to a double overtime win over East Stroudsburg in PSAC East action on Saturday.  

Shepherd ran its win streak to five games. 

Junior Marcus Banks added 26 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and a pair of steals for the Rams (14-8, 10-5). Sophomore Favor Okigweh posted a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. 

Sophomore Brody Davis (contributed 11 boards.  

Saleem Payne scored 20 points and Ethan Maynard added 18 for the Warriors (16-7, 10-7).    

The game featured 16 lead changes and 12 ties. The Rams held the lead for 34:39. 

After East Stroudsburg took a 73-71 lead on a layup by Adrian Brito with 2:08 left in regulation, Daouda Traore scored on a dunk with 1:14 left to force overtime.  

Payne fired in a three-pointer for the Warriors in the final seconds of overtime to force a second extra session.  

The Rams outscored ESU, 16-11, in the second overtime to notch the win.
