WAYNESBORO, Pa. – The Waynesboro Area School District Board of School Directors voted Tuesday night to reinstate Summitview Elementary Principal Steven Pappas, ending months of administrative leave and legal proceedings that have divided the local community.
The decision came during a meeting at the district’s Clayton Avenue headquarters. While the meeting remains in progress as the board addresses other agenda items, the vote regarding Pappas’s employment status was met with immediate reaction from the gallery.
Pappas was placed on paid administrative leave in November 2025 following allegations of unprofessionalism. The district initially sought his demotion, a move that sparked more than 20 hours of evidentiary hearings. During those proceedings, district administrators and Pappas’s legal counsel presented conflicting testimony regarding his leadership and conduct.
The case became a focal point for community activism over the winter and spring. Supporters of Pappas organized multiple petitions and public protests, urging the board to return the administrator to his post at Summitview.
District officials have not yet released a timeline for Pappas’s physical return to the elementary school building.
Board members are expected to continue the public meeting late into the evening.
