WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity swim team picked up where it left off last season – with a win.
Mady Barker, Ruth Phillips, and Rylee Tritle picked up four first-place finishes. At the same time, Claire Yost, Vanna Keyser, Lili Moreno, Bella Moreno, and Grace Wolfinger added firsts during Waynesboro’s 133-55 win in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Waynesboro Area YMCA.
Meanwhile, the Indians and Bulldogs finished in a deadlock (82-82).
“The team had a strong performance for their first meet,” said Waynesboro coach Sharon McIlquham. “We had some swimmers doing lifetime bests already this year, which is exciting. We had a lot of our newer, younger swimmers step up. Overall, for the first meet, this put us in a good spot for the season.”
Barker, Tritle, and Phillips each swam a leg in the 200-meter freestyle relay, with Waynesboro finishing in 2:14.43. They also teamed up (along with Moreno) in the winning 200 freestyle relay (2:01.56).
Barker won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:38.13 and the 100 backstroke (1:11.08). Phillips won the 50 freestyle (29.10) and 100 freestyle (1:06.10). Tritle won the 100 butterfly in 1:15.16.
In the boys’ meet, Jasper Estes and Will Yost also nabbed four top finishes, while Andrew Bryan and Cello Dimino added firsts.
Yost won the 200 freestyle in 2:10.18 and the 400 freestyle (4:42.83). He also competed in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay events. Estes won the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley, while he also swam a leg in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
Waynesboro hits the pool next Tuesday at home against Susquehanna Township starting at 4 p.m.
