Waynesboro eyes another run in the pool

WAYNESBORO – The cycle continues for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams.

The 2025-26 season marks a changing of the guard for a program entering its fourth season as a Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Athletic Association-sanctioned sport. And, with the departure of 18 swimmers from two undefeated squads that also won the Mid-Penn Colonial Division titles, a new season presents new challenges.

Can they do it again?

“This will be a rebuilding year on both sides,” said Waynesboro Coach Sharon McIlquham. “I have confidence that the new group of student athletes on the team will continue to improve and begin to fill the spots left by some of those seniors.”

District 3 champion Eve Phillips has led the Maidens during the past four years. The runner-up at last season’s PIAA Championship is taking her talents to Mount St. Mary’s.

“Our boys lost a lot of talented swimmers; however, we have a lot of faith in the recruits we have had join the team and look for a lot of growth from them,” McIlquham said.

“Our teams have had an amazing run since the inception of the team four years ago. The athletes who have been around for this run have worked hard and taken advantage of this situation in which they could proudly represent Waynesboro in such a positive way. They took great pride in remaining undefeated and have left an impact on these upcoming athletes who hopefully will set their sights on similar goals.”

Whether the boys or girls win league titles remains to be seen. Either way, McIlquham expects both to be competitive.

Returning starters for the Indians are Will Yost, Andrew Bryan, Cello Dimino, Luke Halstead, Levi Horst and Oliver Garroway.

On the girls’ side, they are Mady Barker, Riley Tritle, Ruth Phillips, Savannah Keyser, Leah Yost, Claire Yost, Avery Hess and Lili Moreno.
