HS Girls Indoor Track and Field Previews: Chambersburg, loaded with talent and depth, eager to kick off season

It’s no secret that Chambersburg possesses one of the most stable track and field programs in the Mid-Penn Conference.

Even in the Pennsylvania winter, a season where indoor track is designated as a club sport, the Trojans can be found in large numbers honing their craft on the invitational scene. With more than 40 athletes listed on this season’s roster, including several standouts from Chambersburg’s cross country squad, the Trojans could be in for yet another productive campaign.

While Chambersburg looks to reload, several other squads in the Local.News1 coverage area are dealing with heavy graduation losses, most notably Smithsburg, which has lost the majority of its team that finished second in the state last winter.

In our girls indoor track and field previews, we’ll take a closer look at the Trojans and Leopards, while also shining the spotlight on our other area teams.

Stay with Local.News1 in the days to come as we continue to preview the winter sports season.

Below are team-by-team previews for the six indoor girls track teams in the Local.News1 coverage area:

Waynesboro Maidens

Meet the Maidens: With the graduation of star jumper Jaeda Dockman, now competing for the University of California (Pa.), Waynesboro will be exclusively a running team this winter … Maddie Ruefle and Ella Swart are back for indoor track this winter after qualifying for districts in cross country this fall … Ruefle took 109th at districts in 21:13, while Swart claimed 158th in 22:09 … Braelyn Thompson, who competed in the Mid-Penn cross country meet, also returns for the Maidens … Katie Behnke is projected to return for Waynesboro, while Morgan Price, a mainstay on the outdoor squad, has signed on for the indoor team this winter.

Meet the Blue Devils: Greencastle’s roster will look much different this season with the graduation of a talented senior class that included Jaylynn Schmuck, a PIAA qualifier in the triple jump last spring … Graduation hit the Blue Devils especially hard in the sprints not only with the loss of Schmuck, the team’s fastest sprinter, but also Anna Sullivan, Sophie Bitner, Emily Angelini, and Hailey Baker … Tiegan Thompson is Greencastle’s top returning sprinter, with Alyssa Fowler also projected to come back for the Blue Devils … Sophia Denlinger and Monica Schemel had quality seasons for Greencastle’s cross country squad, and should give the Blue Devils a boost in the distance events … Bailey Hurley is a PIAA-caliber thrower who should compete well on the invitational scene, while Kadence Abbott and Aqueelah Hodge could be in for breakout seasons in the hurdles … Emily Forrester, a distance runner for the outdoor track squad, is set to give indoors a try this winter.

She is a returning regional medalist in both the 55 and 300 … Emilia Spithaler, a fifth-place region finisher in the high jump, will be gunning for a return trip to states this season … Smithsburg is projected to return four other region qualifiers in Acasia Todd (55), Adalynne Shiffler (500), Grace Aaron (55 hurdles), and Emmaleigh Mentzer (pole vault).
