Something that once seemed unattainable for the Greencastle-Antrim girls volleyball squad — winning a District 3-3A title — has now happened two years in a row.
A year after claiming their first district title in school history, the Blue Devils have successfully defended their championship on Saturday, topping Middletown by a 3-0 score. Greencastle-Antrim advances to the PIAA Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils will be joined on the PIAA stage by the Chambersburg boys soccer team, which landed a runner-up finish at the District 3-4A Tournament with a 1-0 loss to No. 1-seeded Warwick. The Trojans begin their journey at states on Tuesday.
Cross country season ended in Pennsylvania with the PIAA Championships last weekend. There were no area medalists, but Chambersburg’s Julian Clark was close, taking 33rd in 16:47. Maryland cross country staged its penultimate event with the West Region Championships. Smithsburg’s boys conquered the 1A meet, with Dylan Herbst (2nd in 16:25) and Michael Wynkoop (5th in 16:33) leading the way, while the 3A girls meet featured strong finishes from North Hagerstown’s Kenzie Philp (3rd in 19:29) and Caroline Philp (5th in 19:51).
Golf season came to a conclusion in Maryland with the MPSSAA Championships. The area’s top golfer was South Hagerstown’s Luke Leisinger, who carded an 83-85-168 at the 4A-3A meet.
Maryland’s football regular season ended with a bang, with South Hagerstown posting a 20-14 upset victory over North Hagerstown in the Hagerstown Gridiron Classic. In girls flag football, only team remains alive in the MPSSAA postseason: Smithsburg, which opened with a 21-0 win over Walkersville in the 2A-1A West Region quarterfinals.
