Greencastle-Antrim’s football squad is hitting its stride.
The Blue Devils marched to their third consecutive win in Friday’s Mid-Penn Colonial Division game against Boiling Springs, popping the Boiling Springs Bubblers by a 26-13 score. With the victory, Greencastle (4-5, 3-4) is now knocking on the door for a possible berth into the District 3-3A postseason.
Fast break is a basketball term, but its a good way to describe how the Blue Devils exploded for an early two-score lead. Noah Shifflett intercepted a pass on Boiling Springs’ first possession, and Greencastle soon cashed in on the turnover with a seven-yard TD run from Shifflett. From there it took just two plays — a successful onside kick and a 48-yard scoring run from Blake Reuter — for the Blue Devils to double their lead to 14-0.
Boiling Springs (1-8, 0-7) battled back with a score of its own, but Greencastle led 20-6 at halftime courtesy of a 17-yard TD run from Lars Galinanes. The Bubblers posted another TD in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils put the game away with a one-yard scoring plunge from Reuter.
Greencastle, ranked No. 12 in the 10-team district playoff picture, returns to action on Friday for a must-win game against West Perry. The Mustangs (7-2, 5-2) are coming off a 27-20 win over Milton Hershey.
Cumberland Valley 7, Chambersburg 0
Offense was hard to come by for both the Eagles and Trojans in Friday night’s Commonwealth Division clash.
Cumberland Valley (4-5, 4-4) scored the game’s only points — a four-yard TD plunge from Hayden Johnson — with 26 seconds remaining. The Eagles managed 222 yards of offense and posted 13 first downs, but lost two fumbles against the Chambersburg defense.
The Trojans (4-5, 3-5) were held to 115 yards, including negative rushing yardage, and were forced to punt seven times. Chambersburg QB Cam Green completed 14 of 19 passes for 117 yards, with his top targets being Davonte Scott (7 catches, 58 yards) and Brycen Murray (4-34).
With one week remaining in the regular season, Chambersburg ranks No. 9 in the 10-team District 3-6A playoff picture. The Trojans return to the field on Friday with a road game at Central Dauphin (3-6, 3-5), a team coming off a 27-0 loss to Harrisburg.
Lower Dauphin 41, Waynesboro 17
Lower Dauphin extended its winning streak to three games with Friday’s Keyston Division victory over Waynesboro.
The Falcons (6-3, 6-2) used two TDs from Hunter Strohm to build a 21-3 halftime lead, and put the game away in the second half with scoring runs from Tyler Newman and Connor Kreiser.
Stats were not available for the Tribe (2-7, 1-7), who will be aiming to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday at Hershey. The Trojans (6-3, 5-3) are coming off a 7-0 loss to Mechanicsburg.
Fort Hill 48, North Hagerstown 6
North Hagerstown’s Ty Fauntleroy totaled 11 carries for 69 yards and a TD, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Hubs to hold serve with Fort Hill on Friday.
The Sentinels (4-3), fueled by three TDs from Braelyn Younger, built a 25-0 halftime lead and never looked back. North Hagerstown (5-2) got on the board in third quarter with a 12-yard TD run from Fauntleroy.
The Hubs will be looking to bounce back on Friday when they travel to face Boonsboro (4-3), a team coming off a 29-20 loss to SEED.
Williamsport 21, South Hagerstown 12
South Hagerstown was able to sustain drives against Williamsport, but the Rebels struggled to put up much-needed points on Thursday.
The Wildcats (5-2) were leading 14-0 in the third quarter before South QB Lucas Semler found Kareem Walton for a 32-yard TD pass. Williamsport punched back with a TD of its own, before the Rebels responded with a one-yard scoring run from JoJo Davis to cut the Wildcats lead to 21-12.
That score stuck for the final score as South’s offense stalled in the red zone down the stretch.
The Rebels (2-5) will be aiming to rebound on Friday when they play host to Liberty (4-3), a team coming off a 15-14 win over Winters Mill.
Smithsburg 14, Catoctin 6
Smithsburg QB Luke Scott fired two TD passes to lead the Leopards to victory over Catoctin on Thursday.
Scott delivered his first scoring strike from 24 yards out to Dakota Sowers in the first quarter to give Smithsburg (4-3) a 7-0 lead. That advantage doubled to 14-0 in the second quarter, when Scott delivered a five-yard TD pass to Marquis Weakfall.
Catoctin (1-6) scored in the game’s final minute, but could not get the ball back.
The Leopards will be looking for their win in four games on Friday, when they hit the road to take on Fort Hill (4-3), a team coming off a 48-6 win over North Hagerstown.
