5 things to do this weekend

Local treasures will sprout like autumn leaves at Greencastle’s Fall Market Day, where more than a dozen artisans and vendors promise a bounty of unique finds. The open-air market, hosted by the shop, consign & collect co., and the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, on the lawn between 136 and 144 E. Baltimore St. Shoppers can browse baked goods, handcrafted art, woodworking and homegrown goods while supporting the local business community, with sponsorship from F&M Bank.

Lizards, snakes and turtles, oh my — they’re all slithering into the Blue Ridge Summit Free Library for a special “Reptile Invasion” program. The hands-on, educational event takes place Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is open to all ages. Presented by the nonprofit Reptile Rescue, the program gives visitors a chance to get up close with a variety of scaly creatures. The drop-in event will be held outdoors, rain or shine, and no registration is required.

Liberty’s ringing, and Franklin County’s bringing the party! On Saturday, Sept. 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center in downtown Chambersburg will host the unveiling of Franklin County’s Bell Across PA, a centerpiece of America’s 250th birthday celebration. The event, organized by the America250PA Franklin County Committee, features music, living history displays, and a birthday cake to mark the nation’s milestone. Artist Andrea Finch of The Foundry crafted the bell, which was previewed on a float at the Greencastle Old Home Week Celebration, joined by figures representing the county’s frontier, Civil War, World War II, and modern eras.

Arts, history and fireworks are set to collide in Hagerstown this weekend. The City of Hagerstown will host its annual City Park Fall Fest from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at City Park, 501 Virginia Ave. The free, family-friendly event will feature living history demonstrations, museum tours, art activities, food and craft vendors, live entertainment and children’s amusements. Festivities conclude with fireworks over City Park Lake at 7:45 p.m.

Muskets will blaze and history will breathe at Fort Frederick State Park this weekend. Reenactors portraying French, British and American Indian figures will converge on the historic site in Big Pool, Maryland, for the French and Indian War Muster on Sept. 20 and 21. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, visitors can witness 18th-century battle re-enactments, explore period crafts, and savor offerings from a food vendor. The event, held at 11100 Fort Frederick Road, aims to immerse attendees in the vibrant history of the era. More details are available at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website.
