5 things to do this weekend

Why book a flight to the past when you can climb right in? Aviation buffs and curious families alike are invited to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum’s Fairchild Dome Hangar, where vintage aircraft take center stage July 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can explore more than a century of aviation history and, for a $200 donation, experience the thrill of open cockpit flight in an authentic 1943 PT-19 or closed cockpit UC-61 – the very models that helped win World War II. The event promises hands-on exhibits, legendary planes and memories that soar far above your average Saturday outing. For details, readers may call 301-733-8717 or email [email protected].

Dinosaur lovers, prepare to stomp, chomp and RAWR as Dino Weekend returns to Twin Bridge Campground. This crowd-pleasing event, set for July 18 through July 20 at 1345 Twin Bridge Road, Chambersburg, invites families and adventurers of all ages to take a hayride with a dinosaur, join a foam party and cap off the evening with a dino dance party under the stars. With classic favorites and hands-on activities, the festival promises prehistoric fun at every turn. For reservations, readers may call 717-369-2216.

Scoops, stories and summer sunshine are on the menu as the Blue Ridge Summit Free Library hosts its 49th annual Ice Cream Social and Book Sale this Saturday, July 19. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the library grounds will transform into a lively festival featuring more than 5,000 books for readers of all ages, a free 5K fun run and dog walk, and a variety of interactive entertainment, including performances by The Wayne Band and local artists. With Sarah’s Creamery serving up Penn State Creamery ice cream and dozens of community vendors, the event serves as the library’s primary fundraiser to preserve its historic 1891 building. Shoppers can also try their luck at a silent auction, explore a White Elephant Sale, and pick up discounted library apparel, all while supporting a cornerstone of the Blue Ridge Summit community.

Who says the best brews come from big names? Waynesboro’s Main Street Park is set to prove otherwise as Rough Edges Brewing taps into local talent for its third annual Homebrew Competition and Festival. The community is invited to savor free samples from area homebrewers, enjoy Fat Russ BBQ, and groove to live music, all while contenders vie for the prize of having their beer professionally brewed. The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 19, with admission free and plenty of opportunities for both seasoned beer enthusiasts and casual tasters to raise a glass.

If you think history is dull, you haven’t been to downtown Chambersburg in July. On Saturday, July 19, the streets will crackle with excitement during “1864: Ransoming Burning & Rebirth of Chambersburg,” a free living history event featuring dramatic re-enactments complete with actors, horses and blazing special effects. The daylong festival, which kicks off at 9 a.m. with Old Market Day, celebrates Chambersburg’s resilience after its Civil War destruction with art, crafts, music, food and the crowd-favorite A Cappella & Unplugged finals. Festivities culminate just before dark as spectators relive the town’s fiery past and witness its triumphant rebirth. Full details can be found at explorefranklincountypa.com/1864-burning.
