5 things to do this weekend

Jim’s Farmers Market is rolling out the red carpet for its own landmark anniversary—turning 45 is just the start of the festivities. On Friday, June 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Grant Street venue in Chambersburg will host “Jim’s Birthday Bash,” drawing crowds for a day packed with food trucks, local vendors, prize games, face painting and bounce houses. Neighboring businesses Omega Coffee and Gearhouse Brewing Co. will join the celebration with outdoor sales, and Omega will feature live music from 4 to 7 p.m. Hungry guests can sample offerings from Boost Burger, Pizza Shack, Grappling Crab Shack, Hercules Kitchen, Uncle Eddie’s BBQ, Celia’s Food Company, Chad Ebersole Seafood and BBQ, Dabo-Rye, Bernard’s Jamaican Jerk Chicken, and Montezuma’s Margarita Bar. Jim’s will host a scavenger hunt with a $100 prize, door prizes and merchandise sales inside until 3 p.m., then moving outside. The front parking lot will close at 1:30 p.m. to accommodate food trucks, so regular customers are advised to use side and rear lots or additional parking at Omega and on Kennedy Street. It’s a day designed for fun, community, and a little birthday magic.

They say you can’t be in three places at once – unless you’re in Greencastle on Saturday night, where the spirits of Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Elvis all come to life. “Cline, Cash, and The King: A Tribute” will take over the stage at Green Grove Gardens, 1032 Buchanan Trail E. on June 14,, from 5 to 9 p.m., offering fans a night of legendary music and a hearty dinner buffet from 5 to 6 p.m. Organizers promise a journey through the golden era of country and rock ‘n’ roll, making this tribute a can’t-miss event for lovers of classic tunes.

Like a siren call to fun-seekers, the 2025 Mont Alto Fireman’s Carnival returns to light up the weekend with a blaze of entertainment. From Friday, June 13 through Saturday, June 21, the Mont Alto Fire Company Event Complex at 603 S. Main St. in Mont Alto will host nightly revelry featuring carnival rides, games and a menu packed with burgers, fries and fried treats. The kitchen opens at 5:30 p.m. each evening, and live music starts at 7 p.m., spotlighting Derek Heidel Country Music on Friday, Hot Fun Band on Saturday, and Wallacetown FIVE on Sunday. The event, a cherished annual tradition, raises funds for the local fire company and promises family-friendly thrills for all ages.

Who says you need a silver screen to catch a blockbuster? Families, friends and movie lovers are invited to the City Park Band Shell at 501 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, Friday, June 13, for a free outdoor movie event hosted by Hagerstown Parks and Recreation. Festivities and activities begin at 7 p.m., with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (PG) rolling as soon as dusk settles in. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs—or take a seat at the band shell—and enjoy concessions while soaking up a fun-filled evening beneath the stars. The event is free and open to the public, and updates regarding possible weather cancellations can be found on the official Facebook page.

Liberation stories don’t always come from history books—sometimes they’re told from the porch. On Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m., the Newcomer House at Antietam National Battlefield will host a free Porch Program spotlighting the often-overlooked roles Black Americans played in their own emancipation. Educator, actor and historic interpreter ZSun-Nee Miller-Matema, who also serves on the Board of the Friends of Tolson’s Chapel, will lead the talk, “Juneteenth – Little Known Facts About How Blacks Contributed to Their Own Liberation!” The event, held at 18422 Shepherdstown Pike in Keedysville, Maryland, invites the public to discover the accomplishments of Black soldiers and community members before and after Juneteenth. The Newcomer House, the last dwelling on the battlefield to witness the conflict, regularly opens its doors as a visitor center and exhibit for the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.
