HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Two of the most iconic World War II aircraft arrived in Washington County this week, offering residents a rare opportunity to experience living aviation history up close.
The B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” and the B-25 Mitchell “Maid in the Shade” arrived Monday at the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. The aircraft will be on public display June 16 through June 21 as part of the Flying Legends of Victory Tour.
Hosted by the Arizona Commemorative Air Force, the tour brings historic warbirds to communities across North America, allowing visitors to explore the aircraft and learn about the crews who flew them during World War II.
Public ground tours will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 2 to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is $15 per person or $30 for a family of four.
Flight experiences will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Ride prices range from $375 to $850 depending on aircraft and seating location.
The B-17 Flying Fortress, known for its durability and role in strategic bombing missions, remains one of the most recognizable aircraft of the war. The B-25 Mitchell, a medium bomber made famous by the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan, was used extensively in multiple theaters.
“Maid in the Shade,” a B-25J model built in 1944, is among only a few dozen still flying today out of nearly 10,000 produced. The aircraft flew combat missions over Italy and Yugoslavia during the war.
Organizers say the tour offers more than a static display, giving visitors a sensory experience that includes the sound, vibration and presence of fully operational historic aircraft.
“This is a chance for people to connect with history in a tangible way,” organizers said in a release. “You can step inside the aircraft, meet the crews and hear firsthand the stories of those who served.”
Media access, including aircraft tours and crew interviews, will be available by request throughout the week.
The Arizona Commemorative Air Force, a nonprofit organization founded in 1977, operates one of the largest fleets in the CAF and is dedicated to preserving military aviation history through education and flight.
