Waynesboro Rotary awards three $5,000 scholarships to local graduates

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — The Waynesboro Rotary Club has awarded three $5,000.00 Thompson Scholarships: to Zacharee K. Bowers, Christina Pan and Alexis A. Swiney, all of Waynesboro.

Zacharee plans to attend Wilson College pursuing his goal to graduate with a degree in early childhood education. Christina plans attend Penn State to pursue her goal to graduate with a nursing degree. Alexis plans to attend Belmont University to pursue her goal to graduate with a degree in neuroscience.

All of these recipients have sought to serve within their school and community as much as possible, Rotary leaders said, pursuing the club motto of “Service Above Self.”

As well as being a two-sport athlete through much of high school, Zach has coached and volunteered with youth sports teams, has collected items and donations for local charities and the Make a Wish Foundation and provided service through his church.

Christina is president of the senior class, vice president of Student Council and has assisted in activities for both preschoolers and a local elementary school.

Alexis won the volleyball team “Miss Unsung” award, has been involved with Special Olympics and was the founding president of the Debate Club.

All three students have received honors in academics and have cited their involvement with their church as significant to their life.

This scholarship program was established in 1993 by Rotarian William W. Thompson in memory of his father, William A. Thompson, a past president of the local Rotary Club. It is administered by a committee of the Waynesboro club and is intended to assist worthy candidates in their quest for higher education.

Because “Service Above Self” is Rotary’s motto, applicants’ participation in school and community activities that demonstrate service to others is an important component in consideration for the scholarship.
