WAYNESBORO, Pa. – The Waynesboro Olympics brought together students, staff and community members April 30 at Buchanan Automotive Stadium, celebrating inclusion, school spirit and achievement.
Athletes from Waynesboro Area Senior High School, Waynesboro Area Middle School, Mowery Elementary and Fairview Avenue Elementary participated in the annual event, joined by student volunteers known as “buddies.”
The day began with a procession through the high school halls, where teachers and students lined the corridors to cheer on the Olympians as they made their way to the stadium.
Opening ceremonies started at 10 a.m. and featured the recitation of the Olympic oath. A senior Olympian performed the national anthem.
Throughout the day, athletes rotated through a variety of activities, including track and field events, dance and games and recreational stations such as bounce houses, sidewalk chalk, face painting and bubble play. Ice cream was also provided.
Lunch for athletes and their buddies was sponsored by donations from McCleary Bus Lines and Heck-Meyers LLC, coordinated by the Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Department. The department also provided free water for athletes’ families.
The event concluded with closing ceremonies, during which each Olympian received a medal in recognition of their participation.
