WASHS students wow in speech contest

WAYNESBORO — Waynesboro Area Senior High School students didn’t shy away from hot-button issues in this year’s Rotary Club of Waynesboro’s Four-Way Speech Contest.

More than a dozen students in grades 9 to 12 participated in an early round to showcase Rotary’s Four-Way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Three finalists competed for cash prizes Feb. 25 at Rotary’s regularly scheduled meeting at Waynesboro Country Club.

Tenth-grader Kiley Bui received top marks from the three-judge panel, allowing her to advance to a regional competition in which other clubs’ students will be represented. Kiley’s presentation concerned the benefits of studying abroad in a well-rounded education.

Addison Callaway, 11th grade, and Sayvian Hollimon, 11th grade, spoke about, respectively, stem cells being used in medical advancements and the pitfalls of racial profiling.

Judges for the contest were Rotarian Jeff Rock, Pat Ryan from NewsTalk 103.7FM, and Jennifer Fitch, a communications specialist with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
