Washington County plans day-long celebration for 250th anniversary

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Washington County will celebrate its 250th anniversary with a full day of family activities, live entertainment and fireworks on July 4 at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center.

The free event will run throughout the day at the center, 7313 Sharpsburg Pike near Boonsboro, with gates opening at noon. County officials invite residents and visitors to commemorate the county’s founding in 1776 through historical exhibits, children’s activities, food vendors, a community ceremony and an evening drone show followed by fireworks.

A commissioners’ ceremony at 7 p.m. will serve as the centerpiece of the celebration. The program will recognize Washington County’s history, honor generations of residents who helped build the community and look toward its future.

The schedule also includes the Paws & Pistons Car Show from noon to 5 p.m., along with live entertainment throughout the day. Families will find a dedicated Kid Zone offering activities during the afternoon.

To help accommodate visitors, Washington County Transit and Middletown Valley Bank will provide free shuttle service throughout the day from the Washington County Transit Transfer Station at 123 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown to the Agricultural Education Center.

Additional parking and shuttle service will be available beginning at 3 p.m. from the Fairplay Volunteer Fire Company.

Parking will not be permitted along Sharpsburg Pike because of safety concerns. Officials encourage visitors to use designated parking areas or take advantage of the shuttle service.

The evening will conclude with a drone show beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m., followed immediately by a fireworks display. The drone show is sponsored by Volvo, which is marking 65 years of manufacturing in Washington County. The fireworks are being presented in partnership with The Arc of Washington County.

Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and spend the day enjoying the activities and exhibits.
