Trees coming to borough park

WAYNESBORO – TreePennsylvania notified the Borough of Waynesboro of its acceptance into the fall 2022 Bare Root Tree Grant program. Through this program the borough will receive 10 bare root trees – five honey locust and five red oak — to be planted at Mt. Airy Park.

The Bare Root Tree program assists communities in Pennsylvania through their commitment to urban and community forests and by increasing the tree canopy. The program provides 10 to 20 free, large caliper bare root trees for planting on land owned by a municipality or non-profit organization.

The trees will be planted at Mt. Airy Park in Waynesboro to provide more shade around the playground equipment and grass area. Currently there are 12 trees located on the Mt. Airy Avenue side of the park, however, more are desired to provide additional shade for park goers.

“We are very grateful that TreePennsylvania is dedicated to `green infrastructure’ on not just a state level, but a local level as well,” Borough Manager Jason Stains said. “These trees will stand in the park for decades to come, and will assist with our continued recognition as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.”

Trees provide many benefits to the 80 percent of Pennsylvanians who live in towns and cities. Forests and trees enrich people and increase the quality of life and community by supporting healthy environments and social and economic activity.

The Borough’s trees will be delivered on Nov. 7, 2022, and will be planted by Borough staff.

TreePennsylvania is a state-wide, non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing forests throughout Pennsylvania’s urban landscape. Funding for this term is made possible through private donors, United States Department of Agriculture/U.S. Forest Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
