WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Route 997 traffic will shift beginning Monday, April 13, as crews begin work to build two roundabouts near Waynesboro, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Weather permitting, traffic will be moved to the west onto temporary pavement near Orchard Road to allow construction of a roundabout at Route 997 and Orchard Road. The shift also will allow work to continue on a second roundabout planned for the intersection of Route 997 and Washington Township Boulevard.
During the traffic shift, motorists may encounter single-lane restrictions under flagging. Once the shift is complete, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction.
The $6.2 million project includes roadway widening, new ADA curb ramps, drainage and stormwater improvements, and new lighting. Tomstown Road is permanently closed between Route 997 and Washington Township Boulevard. Short detours may occur on Orchard Road and Washington Township Boulevard during construction.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project, PennDOT said. Work is expected to be completed by August 2028.
