The Institute Presents Autumn EXPLORE! Programs for Kids

Students had fun building their own lean-to style shelter or fort in the woods during one of last year’s EXPLORE! programs. A new series of programs is scheduled for June and July at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

WAYNESBORO– The Institute is offering a series of four new outdoor adventure programs in October. Designed for kids in grades K to 5, EXPLORE! programs will run after school on Thursdays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

All program activities are outside, and each week features a different theme. Taught by Institute educators, programs include educational activities related to the season and theme. Students may attend any or all sessions.

The programs are:

Thursday, October 6 • 4 to 5 p.m.

Discovering Sunflowers

Students will learn all about sunflowers. They will investigate the giant flower head itself, learn about the seeds (and find out if they are edible!), and explore the life cycle of the tall flowers. In addition, kids will listen to a related story book, and create a sunflower sun catcher craft to take home.

Thursday, October 13 • 4 to 5 p.m.

Amazing Leaves!

Students learn about why leaves are so important, and about their life cycle. Why do leaves change color in the fall? Investigate a leaf to see how they “breathe.” In addition to a story book about leaves, kids will play a leaf game and make a leaf lantern craft to take home.

Thursday, October 20 • 4 to 5 p.m.

Fall Fun and Fort Building

This program introduces STEM concepts. Students will enjoy a seasonal nature story book, then will go on a guided “wondering walk” through the forest. Finally, students will work together with others to build a lean-to structure with natural materials.

Thursday, October 27 • 4 to 5 p.m.

All About Pumpkins

Kids learn about the many kinds, sizes, shapes—and different colors—of pumpkins. They will play a pumpkin ring toss game, and also the Wandering Pumpkin game. They will take home a recipe for roasting their own pumpkin seeds. In a special craft, kids will create pom-pom pumpkins.

Pre-registration and payment in advance are required. Fee: Single Session– $5 member, $6 general public. Attendance is limited.
