Teens dive into fly fishing and science

Area youth can learn about fly fishing during a two-day summer camp at Orvis Hill Country in Fairfield on Monday and Tuesday, July 9 and 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is hosted by Buttonwood Nature Center, home of The Institute.

The Fly Fishing Adventure Camp is part of Buttonwood’s DISCOVER series for students completing grade 5 through age 17, and combines fly fishing with earth science, limnology and biology.

“During the two-day outdoor camp, students learn about fly fishing, the art of fly-tying and so much more on the beautiful Orvis Hill Country property,” said Pam Rowland, Buttonwood’s educational site coordinator and the event organizer.

Three program rotations each day feature a variety of activities; a break for lunch is also part of the schedule.

With instruction by Orvis fishing experts, students will learn fly fishing essentials like rod rigging and essential knots, gear and tackle, stream entomology, fly selection, how to “read water,” and how to play, land and safely release fish.

In addition, Buttonwood staff will guide students in learning about freshwater biology, including pond vegetation as well as aquatic “critters” like fish and amphibians that inhabit fresh water bodies in our region.

Limnology, the study of biological, chemical and physical features of lakes and other bodies of fresh water, will also be introduced during the camp.

An exploration hike in the nearby woods, guided by a Buttonwood faculty naturalist, invites students to discover natural wonders and will include forest ecology, geology, and plant identification.

The camp is open to students who have completed grades 5 through age 17.

The fee is $100 for members of Buttonwood Nature Center/The Institute, and $110 for the general public.
