Suicide threat leads to evacuation, street closure

WAYNESBORO—An incident Wednesday afternoon that shut down several blocks of the borough ended late Wednesday night with no injuries.

According to Waynesboro Police, officers were called to the 200 block of West Second Street around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, for the report of a suicide threat with shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and evacuated residents from adjacent apartments.

Waynesboro Chief of Police James Sourbier said the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team was contacted and requested to assist the local force and after several hours and unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a surrender with the subject were unsuccessful, tactical entry teams entered the premises.

The subject was located and taken into custody by PSP. There was no injury to the subject or officers, according to Sourbier.

The streets were re-opened at approximately 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

In addition to PSP, WPD assisted on scene by WVFD fire police, Waynesboro EMS, Waynesboro Fire Dept, PA Game Commission, Franklin County Coroner’s Office, Washington Township Police and Waynesboro maintenance center employees.

No further information was available on the suspect.
