WAYNESBORO—Looking for something to do this weekend? Head downtown for a StoryWalk.

The monthly activity that started in January of 2021 celebrates one year of activities with its February walk featuring the work of Lancaster-area writer Shelleen Weaver, author of the children’s book, “Love Bird.”

During the event, participants follow the pages of Weaver’s book as they read them in downtown windows.

The celebration kicks off Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning at Wee Scot Book Shoppe at 4 E. Main St. and ending at Morning Star: A Perfect Gift, 28 W. Main St.

The first 75 children will get a free book, plus take-home crafts for all.

Copies of Weaver’s next book in the series will be for sale at Morning Star.

The Downtown Window StoryWalk is a joint venture of the Be the Village program of the Waynesboro Area School District and Mainstreet Waynesboro.

“The StoryWalk was the idea of Erica Nemzek, director of WASD’s Be the Village,” said Bill Kohler of Mainstreet Waynesboro. “Erica’s energy and creativity are infectious. She really is the big reason that this program is successful.”

The first 12 walks resulted in more than 1,000 books given away and 1,500 craft kits sent home. On average, more than 20 businesses participate every month, and no kickoff had less than 50 children taking part, Kohler said.

The event is sponsored by the Nora Roberts Foundation.

Kohler said the StoryWalks will continue through at least the end of the year. “We love the impact this activity has on so many levels,” he said. “It’s great for families, for exercise, for our partners and it’s great for our downtown businesses.”
