Storm topples venerable Hagerstown oak

The Chinkapin Oak Tree before the storm was 84 feet high and 200 years old

HAGERSTOWN – Wind gusts of up to 75 miles per hour during a freak storm felled a Hagerstown institution on Friday night. The Chinkapin Oak Tree, which loomed 84 feet over Woodland Way Park was severely damaged by the gales, Washington County Parks & Recreation Department officials announced.

Estimated to be more than 200 years old, the Chinkapin Oak was not only a local landmark but also a symbol of strength and longevity in the community. With a circumference of 14 feet 6 inches, the mighty oak was recognized by the State Department of Natural Resources as a member of its Maryland Big Tree Program

“This iconic tree stood as a living piece of our natural history and a source of pride for the county The loss of this iconic tree is deeply felt,” Andrew Eshleman, director of public works, said. “Its loss is deeply felt.”

County crews are taking their time in the process of safely removing the damaged parts of the fallen tree while officials contemplate options to salvage remaining portions to repurpose for other uses in hopes that the tree’s legacy will remain in some significant way.

County Parks officials are contemplating how they might preserve the memory of damaged town landmark after high winds brought it down.
