Star light, star bright? Hagerstown Almanack can help identify them

HAGERSTOWN – Star light, star bright, when will we be able to see them shine in the sky at night? The 2026 Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack has the answer to that riddle. In the section, Morning and Evening Stars the dates and times of the stars are listed for stargazers to witness one of life’s natural wonders.

LocalNews1 has partnered with The Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack to bring you a story every Monday taken from current or past editions of the Almanack. First published in 1797, it’s the second oldest almanac in the United States and has been in continuous publication for 230 years and is the only almanac in the United States still published by the founders’ direct descendants.

If you are wondering what are the morning and evening stars and what is their significance, here is a brief explanation provided by Space.com:

“A morning star is a planet visible in the eastern sky just before sunrise, while an evening star appears in the western sky shortly before sunset. These names are poetic and observational, originating from ancient skywatchers who noticed Venus’s bright, steady glow that does not twinkle like stars, and its shifting position relative to the Sun throughout the year.”

Morning Stars:

Mercury to Jan. 20, from March 8 to May 13, from July 14 to Aug 26, and from Nov 5.

Venus to Jan. 5 and from Oct. 25.

Mars from Jan. 10.

Jupiter to Jan. 9 and from July 30.

Saturn from March 26 to Oct. 3.

Uranus from May 23 to Nov. 24.

Neptune from March 23 to Sept. 25.

Pluto from Jan. 24 to July 26.

Evening Sars:

Mercury from Jan. 22 to March 6, from May 15 to July 12, and from Aug 28 to Nov 3.

Venus from Jan. 7 to Oct. 23.

Mars to Jan. 8.

Jupiter from Jan. 11 to July 28.

Saturn to March 24 and from Oct. 5.

Uranus to May 21 and from Nov. 26.

Neptune to March 21 and from Sept. 27.

Pluto to Jan. 22 and from July 28.
