GREENCASTLE, Pa. — The Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils varsity football team hosted the South Western Mustangs before an enthusiastic home crowd on Friday night. Wearing their camouflage jerseys for military appreciation night, the Blue Devils met stiff competition and were dominated most of the game, losing 30-14.
First half
The game got off to a slow start riddled with penalties and two strong defenses that wouldn’t give an inch. It was the Mustangs (2-0) that drew the first points with the first quarter nearly at an end. With just 14 seconds remaining, quarterback Blake McMillion threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to receiver Seth Sullivan.
But the Blue Devils (1-1) bounced right back with the very next play. In the game’s highlight moment, with only one second remaining in the first quarter, Dane Medina ran back a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown much to the delight of the boisterous home crowd.
It was early in the second quarter that the Mustangs began to show signs of dominance. With a strong running game, the Mustangs ate up the clock and drove downfield to add three more points to the board with a 30-yard field goal by kicker Chris Lupinacci. The points gave the Mustangs a 10-7 lead over the home team at halftime.
Second half
The second half of the game was all Mustangs. A dominant rushing game led by quarterback Wyatt Carbaugh who gained 118 yards on the ground for the night, including a 36-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter, put the Mustangs up 17-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs would score two more touchdowns, bringing their total points to 30. Despite their struggles on defense, the Blue Devils would not go down without a fight. In a final comeback attempt, quarterback Wyatt Hull found receiver Gavin Logsdon who scored an 80-yard touchdown pass to get the Blue Devils’ final points for the night.
Celebration despite the loss
Kaley Field was filled with excitement for the second game of the season. It was a night to celebrate our nation’s military, and pride for our country could be felt in every corner. Visitors were dressed in camouflage, and red, white and blue attire. Special shirts were sold at the concession stands to honor the evening’s celebration, and a food truck from Lizzy’s Restaurant was onsite to offer some tasty treats to those in attendance.
The Blue Devils will be on the road next Friday, Sept. 11, when they visit the Buchanan Rockets (1-1) in what should be a very exciting game. The next home game for the varsity team will be on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. when they host the Susquehanna Township Indians (0-2).
