Smithsburg’s Cinnamon Bun Fun Run to Benefit Local Families

SMITHSBURG, MD – In just its second year, Smithburg’s Cinnamon Bun Fun Run is on pace to nearly double its fundraising impact and bring holiday cheer to more than 50 local families.

Approximately 200 individuals and community sponsors have pre-registered for this year’s event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct. 21 in downtown Smithsburg. The total number is likely to grow as same-day registration will open at 9 am at Smithsburg Elementary School.

The run has now expanded to include a 5K run through the Smithsburg community, as well as the fun 1K walk/run up Main Street. Both routes end at iconic Hadley Farms Bakery, where runners will be greeted with a high five — and a cinnamon bun! The fun continues from there with music and food vendors, or folks can grab lunch (or breakfast) at one of Smithsburg’s downtown businesses: Dixie Diner, Vince’s Pizza, Trackside Market or the Wolfe’s Den.

All proceeds from the Fun Run benefit the Smithsburg Police Department’s Shop with a Cop event, which ensures that no local family is left out during the holiday season. Intended as a way to build community ties between kids and local law enforcement, the program was brought to Smithsburg by former Police Chief George Lee Knight, Jr. and continued on by Chief Robert Marker who was appointed in 2021. Marker has been instrumental in establishing and promoting the Fun Run as the primary fundraising effort for Shop for a Cop, and is committed to its continued growth. At last year’s shopping event, kids from more than 30 families each received a $300 gift card to spend on anything from winter clothes to toys while they shopped with a cop friend throughout the day. The Dixie Diner also provided food and every family left with a donated turkey and trimmings to complete their holiday dinner.
