SMITHSBURG, Md. – Kaden Dietrich unleashed eight goals and Marquis Weakfall won 14 of 19 faceoffs on Friday to lead Smithsburg to an important 15-3 win over South Hagerstown.
The Leopards, a perennial lacrosse power in Washington County, sent the up-and-coming Rebels to their fourth loss to end the regular season. The Maryland regional playoffs start next week for Class 1A Smithsburg and Class 3A South.
Zach Linn added three goals for Smithsburg, while Andrew Ritter added two.
Brady Snyder and Jake Nussear added a goal each, while Noah Hegbe, and Byron Trevey contributed an assist each.
Dante Rucci had 12 saves in goal for the Leopards.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Urbana 4, South Hagerstown 0
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Urbana took its time against South Hagerstown because Gaby McAnaw made sure it didn’t’ have to hurry.
McAnaw fired a no-hitter, allowing only two walks while striking out 12, to make a three-run fifth early enough to take the lead, leading to a 4-0 win over the Rebels.
And McAnaw even took care of the offense, providing a two run double in the fifth and capped the win with a solo homer in the seventh to drive three of Urbana’s four runs.
Kailia Burke went the distance for the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Only Burke and Chelsea Desmond reached base against McAnaw via the walks.
South closes the regular season on Monday by traveling to Francis Scott Key to rekindle an old rivalry that ended in 2015 while both schools played in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League (MVAL).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Shippensburg 6-5, Shepherd 5-6
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shortstop Ethan Burgreen hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap on Friday to give Shepherd University win and a doubleheader split with Shippensburg to secure a PSAC East playoff berth for the Rams.
The Rams (28-22, 14-14) earned the fifth seed, but must await word on their opening matchup.
Burgreen’s hit drove in outfielder Ethan Jones with the winning run.
Shippensburg (29-19, 16-12) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a two-run homer from Sherman and a solo blast from St. Maria Gorettoi graduate Will Oates.
Shepherd plated one back in the bottom of the inning when outfielder Bodie Pullen walked, stole second, reached third on an error, and scored on a single by catcher Wyatt Lamb.
The Rams added a run in the second on a homer by infielder Alex Rose.
Shepherd overtook the Raiders with a two-run home run by first baseman Nik Rubendall in the sixth for a 5-3 lead.
Shippensburg tied the game 5-5 in the seventh on a two-run homer from AJ Wenrich.
Jones drew a leadoff walk in the seventh to set the stage for Burgreen’s game-winning hit.
Outfielder Sam Hefner had a pair of hits and scored two runs to pace the Rams. Thomas Cano-Piszel had two hits and a pair of runs to pace Shippensburg.
Cooper Bryan moved his record to 2-1 with two-thirds of an inning of relief with a strikeout. Shippensburg’s Jacob Dennis (0-4) took the loss.
Shippensburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when Evan Schoffler singled and then scored on a throwing error.
The Raiders took a 4-0 lead in the second on a solo homer from Kyle Ausgotharp and a two-run homer from Mason Morris.
Shepherd scored one in the second when Jones singled and before scoring on infielder Andrew O’Brien’s sacrifice fly.
Shippensburg took a 5-1 lead in the third when Ty Sherman doubled and on Brady Harbach’s grounder. The Raiders made it 6-1 lead in the fourth on a Thomas Cano-Piszel solo homer.
The Rams scored three runs in the fourth, fueled by O’Brien’s two-run double. Shepherd scored its last run in the seventh on a solo homer by Rose.
Jones had two hits and scored a pair for the Rams. Cano-Piszel had a pair of hits with one run and one RBI to pace the Raiders.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Shepherd 3-2, West Chester 1-8
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Boonsboro graduate Haylee Hartman drove in what proved to be the winning run in Shepherd University’s game one victory on Friday to assure a split with West Chester in a PSAC East doubleheader.
Shepherd (21-21, 15-15) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as outfielder Payton Weaver (a Williamsport graduate) singled and scored on a double off the bat of outfielder Lexi McAllister. McAllister scored on a Hartman’s single.
McAllister reached on an error in the fifth and scored on a single by Hartman to give the Rams a 3-0 advantage.
West Chester got a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Ceara O’Neal.
Hartman led the Rams with a pair of hits.
Madelayne Ruffner fired a complete game, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts to move her record to 13-7. Maci Strechay took the loss.
West Chester jumped to the early lead in the nightcap, taking advantage of two hits and tow errors in the first inning of the nightcap.
Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the second on Weaver’s RBI-single.
The Golden Rams added four runs in the third for a 6-1 lead as Gianna Liciardelli, Kayla Fitzpatrick and O’Neal each drove in runs.
The Rams got a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Allison Gray.
Fitzpatrick went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Rams. Weaver went 3-for-3 to pace the Rams.
