Eleventh-grade students from Shalom Christian Academy in Chambersburg recently participated in an innovative mini-internship program at WellSpan Health, offering them a unique glimpse into the world of healthcare. The program, which took place while the school’s seniors were on their mission trip, provided students with invaluable hands-on learning experiences across various medical departments.
On the program’s Skills Day, students engaged in a wide range of medical procedures and simulations. They practiced laparoscopic surgery techniques, learned how to intubate infants, and even experienced the process of delivering a baby. The young interns also had the opportunity to use lift equipment, perform CPR, take vital signs, and start IVs, giving them a comprehensive overview of essential medical skills.
The internship extended beyond practical skills, allowing students to shadow healthcare professionals in multiple departments. Participants rotated through critical areas such as the emergency room, critical care, labor and delivery, and the neonatal intensive care unit. They also gained exposure to specialized fields including interventional radiology, physical medicine, the catheterization lab, operating room and radiology.
Lindsey Kearns, who played a key role in facilitating this opportunity, received special recognition for her efforts in coordinating the program between Shalom Christian Academy and WellSpan Health. This collaboration exemplifies the growing trend of partnerships between educational institutions and healthcare providers, aimed at inspiring and preparing the next generation of medical professionals.
