WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Waynesboro Rotarian Bob Zimmerman educated and entertained Waynesboro Rotarians last week as a last-minute substitute for a scheduled speaker. He regaled the club with tales about some of his many overseas mission trips.
“I hope some of these stories will be entertaining,” he said. “God has opened a lot of places for me.”
Zimmerman discussed how living and helping to supervise at a children’s home when he was in dental school brought him an appreciation of the joys involved in teaching teenagers. A trip to Romania to provide dental care to a group of physically and mentally challenged children, which he thought would be chaotic, instead turned out to be quietly inspiring.
He talked of a trip to the Dominican Republic, where he obtained a license to practice before he was licensed in the U.S., and extracted more teeth in the space of two days than he had during his entire time in dental school.
Trips to Honduras and Ecuador provided both some harrowing experiences and more tales of inspiration.
Club officials said Zimmerman is certainly a great example to the club of the meaning of service above self.
