Restaurant raises money to help with Salvation Army center fire

Salvation Army Maj. Mark Vanmeter, left, accepts a $700 donation from The Grille at Runways General Manager Heather Hiser, center, and Rider Jet Center Vice President Tom Riford.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Grille at Runways, located at Rider Jet Center at Hagerstown Regional Airport, held a benefit over the weekend to help the local Salvation Army, raising $700.

On March 13, a devastating fire destroyed the Salvation Army Thrift Store. The store was the main source of revenue for the local Salvation Army’s efforts. Last year, revenue from the thrift store helped the Salvation Army provide assistance to more than 41,000 people and prepare more than 27,000 meals for people in need.

Without the store, the Salvation Army cannot adequately care for the families who depend on its support, said Tom Riford, Rider’s vice president, who encouraged donations to help the organization.

The Hagerstown Salvation Army is continuing to accept donations during daytime hours as it works to rebuild, and its spiritual, shelter and meal services are in operation.
