PSU Mont Alto unveils spring 2025 evening series: Free planetarium shows, evening talks, and star parties

Penn State Mont Alto announced the spring 2025 popular Evening Series will again feature three categories of events: planetarium shows, evening talks and star parties. All are free to the public and will be offered both in-person, weather permitting, and virtually. Advanced registration is required.

Planetarium shows
Explore the night sky, fly around solar system objects and immerse yourself as you enter one of many astronomy-themed full domes. Hosted by Kim Herrmann, Penn State Mont Alto associate professor of physics and astronomy, evening planetarium shows will be offered to the public this spring. Two shows per night are scheduled for the evenings May 1, May 2, 7:00-7:45 p.m. and 8:00-8:45 p.m. in the Allied Health Building White Box, room 115. There will also be a virtual planetarium show at 7:30 p.m. on April 2.

Evening talks
Join us for an inspiring, new line up of evening talks, where Penn State Mont Alto faculty will share captivating experiences and enriching knowledge about Penn State and the world beyond. All held in zoom and the Auditorium in the General Studies Building, the series will offer three distinct talks:

7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17: “Tips Toward Living Sustainably,” presented by Kristi Addleman Ritter, reference and instruction librarian, and Kim Herrmann, associate professor of physics and astronomy, will teach how what we eat and conversing water are factors that affect the environment.

7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 20: “Quiet Defiance: The Rhetoric of Silent Protest,” presented by David Seitz, associate professor of communications will discuss his recently published edited volume, Quiet Defiance: The Rhetoric of Silent Protest, the nature and rhetorical power of silent protest, and key historical examples of silent protest.

7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27: “Sensory Strategies,” presented by Christine Kimmel, director of the associate occupational therapy assistant program will teach about the sensory strategies and sensory regulations and bring more subconsciousness to your conscious awareness to set yourself up for success in learning activities and other applications.

Star parties
After each evening talk, join us for a telescope viewing and night sky tour with laser pointers, weather permitting. Also hosted by Kim Herrmann, the star parties will be held in the field between Orchard Road and the Mont Alto campus’ General Studies Building parking lot from 8:45 p.m. to about 10:00 p.m.

Attendance at the evening talk is not required to attend the star party.
