CHAMBERBURG, Pa. — A Chambersburg woman is being held in Franklin County Jail after allegedly attempting to steal merchandise from a Walmart and fleeing from police and hiding under a car, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Senchal Mone Coles was charged with misdemeanor retail theft, evading arrest, disorderly conduct, and a citation for public drunkenness following the June 23 incident. Bail was set at $50,000, which Coles did not post.
State police were dispatched around 10:15 a.m. to the Walmart on Lincoln Way East for a report of an active retail theft. While en route, troopers were advised that a woman had taken merchandise and was fleeing on foot.
Police located Coles in the parking lot of a nearby Dairy Queen, where she attempted to evade officers by crawling underneath a vehicle, according to the report. She was quickly taken into custody without further incident.
While being detained, Coles allegedly asked a trooper if she could receive a warning instead of being arrested and inquired whether she would be taken to jail.
According to police, Coles admitted to attempting to steal two car batteries and clothing items valued at $429.34. A Walmart asset protection employee confirmed the value of the merchandise.
Troopers reported that during processing, Coles appeared to be speaking to herself about events that did not occur. Based on her behavior and statements, police determined she was under the influence of a controlled substance and noted she allegedly indicated prior use of crack cocaine.
Coles remains incarcerated at Franklin County Jail.
