Pennsylvania May 19 primaries nearly here, many uncontested

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania primary elections are just days away on May 19th. Many races are uncontested as many seats have just one Republican and one Democrat running. District 91 of Adams County is seeing the highest-stakes race with six names running to unseat incumbent Daniel Moul who has been in office since 2007.

Below you’ll find comments from candidates in contested races, as well as links to find all candidates online or on social media. All candidates were sent questionnaires. Their responses are included if they replied.

  1. Nickolas Lovell (R)

1. Why are you running for office?
“I’m running for State Representative because Adams County deserves a leader who will fight for our values and deliver real results. As a sixth-generation resident, I care deeply about our community and the future we’re building here. I’m stepping up to be a strong, conservative voice who will stand up to the Harrisburg establishment and put our community first.”

2. What is your background and/or experience?
“I currently serve as president of my local school board (Littlestown Area School District), where I’ve focused on responsible leadership and fiscal discipline. Over the past two years, we’ve achieved budget surpluses and passed the first budget in over two decades without a tax increase. I’m also a small business owner, which gives me firsthand experience with the challenges facing local employers and working families.”

3. If you could let voters know one thing about yourself/your campaign, what would it be?
“This campaign is about delivering real results, not politics as usual. I’m not running to be part of the system in Harrisburg; I’m running to challenge it and fight for the people of Adams County.”

4. What sets you apart from other candidates?
“I bring a combination of proven leadership and a willingness to challenge the status quo. I’ve already delivered results at the local level, and I’m prepared to take that same approach to Harrisburg. I’m not a career politician; I’m someone who understands both how government works and where it needs to change.”

5. How do you plan to make your constituents’ lives easier?
“I will focus on lowering the cost of living by fighting to eliminate property taxes, supporting policies that make Pennsylvania more affordable and ensuring government is accountable with taxpayer dollars. My goal is to ease the financial burden on families and seniors so they can keep more of what they earn.”

6. What will be your priorities in office?
“My top priorities will be reforming property taxes, making Pennsylvania more affordable, passing term limits and defending the conservative values that define our community. I will also focus on responsible budgeting and ensuring the government works efficiently for the people it serves.”

  1. Darian Sundberg (D)

1. Why are you running for office?

“I’m running for state representative because I’m tired of how ineffective representatives continue to ignore the needs of our communities. We deserve practical leadership that listens, solves problems and stands up for working families over corporations. I want to support affordable living standards through future forward legislation and help restore integrity to our elected offices.”

2. What is your background and/or experience?

“I have a B.A. in art from Millersville University, and a master’s degree from Syracuse University. I’ve lived and taught overseas, in Japan, where I was awarded the Kizuna Goodwill Ambassador designation from the Toyama prefecture for fostering cross-cultural appreciation. I regularly volunteer for disaster relief programs like building housing for war refugees on the Poland/Ukraine border, building schools/homes in the Bahamas, cleaning up massive flood damage in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and repairing homes in Coastal Bend, Texas. I’m a people-focused person whose priorities are helping people and making their lives more livable, which is exactly what I plan to do as your representative.”

3. If you could let voters know one thing about yourself/your campaign, what would it be?

“I am an everyman, just like you, an art teacher at a school for at-risk youth who can’t take watching our government fail us over and over again any longer. I’m a renter, an artist, a volunteer and motivated to make positive changes in the system so we can all live better lives. Check out my website and see where our ideals align. I think you’ll find we want the same things!”

4. What sets you apart from other candidates?

“I think the thing that represents my distance from the other candidates most clearly is my focus on people-first policies and solutions to PA’s largest problems. This is in stark contrast to their focus on business-centered policies. Both of the other candidates in the contested primary are businessmen/women, and one declared they were fiscally conservative. Those are the policies that have been making life harder and harder for working families over the past 50 years, and it’s irresponsible to keep forging down a damaging path. We need people-centered solutions for all generations and not business as usual.”

5. How do you plan to make your constituents’ lives easier?

“Government is supposed to be all about helping most of the people most of the time, and that is my main goal in running for office. The plan is to make housing more affordable and available; to reduce the tax burden on 80% of Pennsylvanians by reforming the tax code to include wealth and the 70% of corporations that don’t pay taxes. I also want to help support building our infrastructure to include highspeed rail from neighboring cities.”

6. What will be your priorities in office?

“I think the three most important issues we are facing right now are — corruption in government, housing (and other) affordability and the influx of data centers on our state. These would be the top priorities for me to address by co-sponsoring or writing legislation for. We need gift bans, contribution limits and legislative workaround to counter Citizens United to ensure our elected officials are representing the people first. Housing has become less of an American dream, and more of a fairy tale for the younger generations. We need to limit the ability of hedge funds and large corporations to purchase single-family homes. Sitting on empty houses or selling them to themselves in order to drive up value/demand is unacceptable. We need to keep homes for people, and not corporate personhood. Data centers, while not a new concept, represent a real existential threat to our state. As one of the few locations that is primed for supporting these businesses, PA needs time to establish safeguards against exploitation. They are loud, they drain power, they exhaust our water supply and they drive up costs for everyone in the state, without providing more than a handful of long-term Jobs”
