Penn State Extension offers free plant identification walks

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Interested in learning about plants while exploring the natural world? Penn State Extension will offer “Plants in the Park: Plant Identification Walk” on multiple dates and locations from March to November. 

Led by Cathryn Pugh, forestry and wildlife extension educator, each session will feature a leisurely walk through a state park, where participants will discover common plants and learn the basics of plant identification. The workshop will cover botany terminology, plant identification of common species and wildlife uses of plants. Walks will be up to 0.5 miles on gentle paths, with restrooms nearby. Participants should wear comfortable shoes. 

This series is designed for the public, naturalists, foresters, environmental educators, gardeners, landowners and natural resource professionals. 

Walks are scheduled for the following locations and dates:

Caledonia State Park, 101 Pine Grove Road, Fayetteville. 

— June 13: 2:30-4 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. 

The workshop offers continuing education credits, including 1.5 hours toward International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist, 0.75 hours toward board certified master arborist in science, 1.5 hours toward tree worker climber specialist, 1.5 hours toward tree worker aerial lift specialist, 1.5 hours toward municipal specialist, 0.75 hours toward board certified master arborist in management, and 1.5 hours of continuing education credits for the Society of American Forester in category 1. 

Penn State Extension offers the workshops at no charge, but a fee per workshop applies for those requesting continuing education credits. 

Advance registration is encouraged.
