October brings cooler temperatures, rain and frost to the region

Hagerstown almanac

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Fall has officially begun and the weather in October is about what residents in the region have come to expect according to the 2026 Almanack.

Moon phases in October

The Last Quarter moon of October will appear on the third of the month. That will be followed by the New Moon on Oct. 10. Get your wishes ready because on Oct. 18 the First Quarter moon will be in the sky when you look up at the stars. Just in time for Halloween a Full Moon will be shining down on Oct. 28.

Rain, cooler temperatures bring in October

The Almanack predicts that the first week of October will be mild and dry, then turning warmer with scattered showers; so, don’t break out those hoodies just yet. The second and third weeks will have periods of rain and turning seasonably cooler. The end of the month will bring drier weather but expect light frost at night. The week of Halloween there could be more rain and colder nights.

But never fear trick or treaters, here is the Almanack’s prediction for Halloween night.

“A dry, seasonably chilly day is expected with no weather concerns for Trick-or Treat!”

Best days for harvesting

The Best Days for Planting, Weeding & Harvesting diagram in the Almanack will predict the best days for working crop fields and planting root crops, such as onions, carrots, and potatoes. The best days for working in your field in October will be 9-11, 17-18, 26-27. For above-ground crops such as beans, corn, and wheat, the best days are 3-4, 12-13, 22-23, and 30-31. For weeding the fields, farmers should consider Oct. 1-2, 5-8 and 28-29. For the final harvesting of the year, the best days for harvesting will be Oct. 14-16, 19-21 and 24-25.

Fall season has arrived and the weather will transition to cooler temperatures and a little more rain, but there are enough nice days to get that last bit of harvesting completed before all the little trick-or-treaters make their way out for sweets.
