William (Bill) Martin Luther Etter, Jr., 85, passed away at home in Chambersburg on April 25, 2024. Born February 2, 1939, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late William M. L. Etter, Sr., and Hilda Spangler Etter. Living his entire life in Chambersburg, he graduated from CASHS in 1957 and Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1961. He began his financial career working with Investors Diversified Services (IDS), later American Express, alongside his father. He joined F&M Trust Company in 1973 as a trust officer in the investment department. He worked at the bank for nearly 40 years and retired as Vice President of the Trust Department. He married Margaret Bangs on June 25, 1966, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, where he was a lifelong member. Bill was extremely proud of his family and loved spending time with his children, Lisa and Bill, and their families. A highlight of Bill’s summers was spending a week with his family at his favorite vacation spot – Stone Harbor, NJ. A private pilot, Bill enjoyed flying his Cessna 170 to the beach, regional breakfast fly-ins, Millville, PA to visit his in-laws and a host of other spots. An antique car collector and enthusiast, his favorites were his Ford Model As. He belonged to the Mason Dixon region of the American Automobile Club of America, as well as the Hub City Model A Club and looked forward to monthly car club breakfasts and trips. Additionally, he belonged to the Elks Lodge (BPOE#600) and served on Trinity Lutheran’s Endowment Investment Committee. Although a homebody by nature, Bill also enjoyed trips with Peg and friends. His joy came from his family and attending any activities in which his children and grandchildren were involved. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, telling a good "story" and often laughing before the punchline, his love for being outside, enjoying his cars, going to the local airport, and visiting friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peg, just six weeks earlier (March 14, 2024). He is survived by his children: Lisa (Abe) Diehl of Carlisle, PA; Bill (Kim) of Chambersburg, PA; five grandchildren: Ellen Diehl, Camden Etter, Andrew Diehl, Kate Etter, and Ben Etter; his brother, David Etter (Louisa) of Fayetteville, PA. A memorial service for both Bill and Peg Etter will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
