Mr. William Russell Gladhill Jr., 88, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown. He was the husband of the late Goldie Lorraine Gladhill, who preceded him in death on November 4, 2012.
Born November 14, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William Russell Sr. and Leato Irene Strock Gladhill. He attended Hagerstown High School with the Class of 1944, but was drafted to serve during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater with the United States Navy, aboard the USS Barr.
Mr. Gladhill was a retired Correctional Officer, having served with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
Additionally, Mr. Gladhill was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, where he participated with the Last Mans Club of World War II, the W.D. Byron Post 1936 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 378, all of Hagerstown; as well as the USS Block Island Association.
Surviving are his children, Brenda J. Smith and husband, Leonard, of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and John W. Gladhill and wife, Mary, of Sykesville; a grandson and three granddaughters; a great-grandson and four great-granddaughters; and a great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home Hagerstown is handling the arrangements. The family will receive friends at his church, Concordia Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, on Saturday, January 10, beginning at 10 a.m. A memorial service will begin at the church on Saturday at 11 a.m., with his pastor, Rev. Emil Y. Gretarsson, officiating. Inurnment will military honors will be in Rock Gap Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, at a later date.
