Mrs. Sylvia (Puican) Bloom, 98, of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, passed away Monday, April 13, 2026 in Mercy House, Chambersburg, PA.
Born May 1, 1927 in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Salajan) Puican.
Sylvia was a graduate of Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1945.
She and her husband, the late Mr. H. Richard “Dick” Bloom, were married April 9, 1949 in Waynesboro. In 1952 they purchased their property on Charmian Road, turning a barn into a home. Together they shared 70 years of marriage before Dick’s passing May 14, 2019.
In early years, Sylvia was employed at Landis Tool Company and worked for the Department of the State in Washington DC for a short time. A dedicated wife and mother, Sylvia devoted her life to taking care of her home and raising her children.
Generous in nature, Sylvia actively supported numerous organizations and churches throughout the local community. She was a member of St. Rita’s Ladies Society since 1952, starting the annual Christmas mart in 1988. She was a 50 year member of Blue Ridge Garden Club and was a founding member of Waynesboro Day Care Thrift Shop. A woman who was never idle, she bowled twice a week and golfed three times a week for many years, loved the game of Bridge and also was a voracious reader.
Sylvia is survived by two children: Cynthia Mohler of Greencastle, PA and Dr. Howard R. Bloom, Jr. and his spouse, Schu Tam of San Francisco, CA; two grandsons, Matthew Mohler of Greencastle and Mark Mohler of Honolulu, HI; twin great-grandsons, Jameson Mohler and Julian Mohler; step-great-grandson, Aaron Brown; one sister, Valeria Holland; and a number of nieces and nephews as well as a host of extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by nine siblings: Anna Kauffman, Florence Pletos, Sophie Quinton, Mary Knott, Tony Puican, John Puican, Jr., Helen Romanowski, Michael Puican, Catherine McCandless.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 1, 2026 in St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 13219 Monterey Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, with Father Peter DiTomasso, MSSCC officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the church social hall.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fairfield, PA.
