Mrs. Sue Anne (Funkhouser) Spangler, 83, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Monday, August 10, 2026, at Chambersburg Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born May 10, 1943, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (Gearhart) Funkhouser of Hagerstown and Highfield, MD. Sue spent her early childhood years in the West End of Hagerstown before the family moved to Highfield, MD. It was there that she met her future husband, Barry Spangler, at the local carnival. As the story goes, they were sharing a ride on the ferris wheel and have been “going around ever since”. They married on July 23, 1960, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Highfield, MD.
Sue is a graduate of Smithsburg High School. In her early teen years, she held jobs at Rexall Drugs, Hilltop Inn, and Tab Books in Blue Ridge Summit, PA. When she took a position at the Thurmont Bank branch in Cascade, MD, she found what was to become her career. She spent many years working in banking, using her natural skills – dedication, attention to detail, reliability, and pleasant demeanor – to advance through the ranks to head teller, branch manager, and regional manager, all while the bank underwent several acquisitions and mergers. She continued building her impressive skill set as she completed training and certification at The Maryland Banking School. After a successful and fulfilling career, Sue retired from Susquehanna Bank where she served as Regional Vice President.
Sue was an incredibly caring, loving, and supportive force to her many friends and family, which she acknowledged as her greatest joy. Even while working full time, she made time to engage in family activities, volunteering as chaperone for her children’s field trips, serving on the PTA at Cascade School, and working the front lines at hundreds of bake sales, fundraisers, and other events over the years.
Sue attended St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Highfield, MD for many years and has also been an active member at Otterbein Church. Since her move to Chambersburg, she has regularly attended Grand Point Church, taking her seat in the front row whenever she attended.
She was always very interested in gardening and was a regular patron of many local greenhouses and flower shops. This interest continued into her retirement years. She loved the changing of the seasons, seeing baby animals in the springtime, and long rides, especially if the trip involved new roads and new things to see and experience. Sue also enjoyed spending time with friends and family, attending plays and concerts, going to sporting events (bonus if one of the kids or grandkids were participating). She also enjoyed traveling near or far. Some of her memorable excursions were a road trip through the New England states with her family as a child, many trips to the ocean, and trips to New York City, Williamsburg, San Antonio, Florida, and Arizona.
Sue loved her family and was the absolute model of a good parent and good person. She was friendly to everyone she met and believed that everyone deserved to be treated with kindness and respect. She had a true interest in the stories of others and fostered that same quality and goodness in the people with whom she interacted.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Sue was preceded in death by her sister Betty Funkhouser, brother Donald (Diane) Funkhouser, nephew Don Funkhouser, and son-in-law Stan Sidlov.
Sue is survived by her daughters Jennifer Sidlov and Denise (Ed) Ingram, son Kerry (Lisa) Spangler, grandchildren Jarrad (Andi) Spangler, Dylan (Emily) Spangler, Lizabeth Sidlov, and Tim (Lydia) Ingram, great-grandchildren Savannah Spangler and Hayes Ingram, sister Faye (Charlie) Smith, sister-in-law Bonnie Creager, nieces Emily (Steve) Howard, Sarah Smith, and Faye (James) Williams, and nephew Edward “JJ” Yeager.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 14, 2026, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro, officiated by Scott Despres, Director of Care Ministries, Grand Point Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Friday afternoon, in the funeral home. A private burial will follow at Burns Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, PA.
