Born on July 26, 1936, in Palmerton, PA, Sandy was the daughter of the late Lester D. Mack and Dorothy (Sandbrook) Howells. She spent many years in the Washington Metro area, where she raised her family, before settling in Waynesboro, PA.
A proud graduate of Palmerton High School (Class of 1954), Sandy went on to earn her B.S. degree from Kutztown State Teacher College in January of 1959. That same year, on July 11, she married the love of her life, John A. Simek, embarking on a journey that would span many years and countless memories.
Sandy’s deep love for children was the foundation of her life’s work. Her passion for education led her to pursue additional training in special needs and handicapping conditions, earning 30 credits in 1979-1980. Over the years, Sandy taught in Pennsylvania, Prince George’s County, MD, and Montgomery County, MD, retiring in 1996. Her commitment to children extended beyond the classroom as she played a pivotal role in establishing a daycare center for low-income families in Montgomery County, MD. Sandy also founded an overflow shelter for the homeless at St. John’s ELCA in Rockville, MD, demonstrating her compassionate heart and unwavering dedication to serving others.
A devout member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Waynesboro, Sandy’s faith and love for music were integral to her life. She was a cherished member of her church community, sharing her beautiful voice as a soloist for countless weddings, funerals, and special services. Her musical talents extended to directing children’s and youth choirs, inspiring and nurturing the next generation with her warmth and dedication.
Sandy leaves behind her beloved children: son Gregory John Simek of Rockville, MD, and daughter Lynn Simek DelCampo (Dennis) of Newark, DE. She was also the proud grandmother of Steve DelCampo and will be lovingly remembered by her surrogate granddaughters: Dani, Gill, Katrina, Elise, Brittany, and Kristen.
