Ruben Roy Hoyle, 78, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, February 10, 2011, at his home.
Born April 12, 1932, in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Howard Edward Hoyle and Frances Mae Heiston Hoyle Hess.
Mr. Hoyle graduated Hagerstown High in 1950; and attended Hagerstown Junior College.
Later he served three years in the United States Army Signal Corps, Army Security Agency at Fort Buckman, Sobe, Okinawa.
Later he attended US Army School of Drafting, Fort Belvoir, Georgia.
Mr. Hoyle was employed for the City of Hagerstown with 29 years and retired in 1986 as Assistant City Engineer.
Some of the most rewarding aspects of his career included his involvement with the development and construction of Burhans Boulevard, and the transformation of the former Western Maryland Railway Station to the Hagerstown Police Department.
Ruben was the manager of the Optimist Club Team of the Hagerstown Junior Baseball League that won the championship in 1952.
He was a member of the American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42, Amvets Post 10, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378, all of Hagerstown; and the County Engineer Association of Maryland.
Ruben loved traveling, especially cruising and time at the beach.
Following retirement, Mr. Hoyle attended auctions regularly often finding old trunks and antique furniture to refinish.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Sara J. Lowe Hoyle; and son David E. Hoyle and wife Barbara of Bridgeport, Virginia; grandchildren Zachary and Ashley Hoyle, both of Bridgeport; as well as his sister Mildred Bitner, and nephews Harold E. Bitner and Michael K. Bitner and wife Jane, all of Hagerstown.
Besides his parents, Ruben was preceded in death by his step father Kenneth Hess, and niece Deborah Bitner.
A Celebration of Mr. Hoyle’s life will be celebrated at the Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, on Saturday, February 19, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
A service will be held at a later time privately at the family’s convenience.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Hoyle’s name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland
