Robert Lee Henicle, 71, of Waynesboro, passed away in his home surrounded by his family on November 22, 2025 after valiantly fighting cancer for 6 years.

Born December 30, 1953, he was the son of the late Floyd ‘Gus’ Henicle and Matilda ‘Tillie’ (Barlup) Henicle.

Robert was a graduate of Waynesboro High School, Class of 1971. Following his graduation, he joined the United States Army.

During his time in the military, he was a Russian language instructor at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas. It was there he met the love of his life, Gabrielle (van Barneveld) Henicle. They wed in 1980 at the Salem Church in Waynesboro, PA. Robert continued to serve in the US Army until 2001. He was an IT Specialist for the US Government until his retirement in 2016.

Robert was a self taught computer coder. He had varied interests including genealogy, linguistics, history, music, foreign affairs, cooking, and working with his hands. But above all else, he enjoyed time spent with his family. His intellectual curiosity, analytical mind, and profound wisdom were always admired and will be forever missed by those he shared them with.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son, Byron Henicle and his wife Rachael (Geesaman) Henicle; his two grandsons, Jack Henicle and Lucas Henicle; his daughter Lydia Henicle and her partner Frank Galaviz, all of whom adored him.

He also leaves behind his siblings Floyd Henicle, Barbara (Henicle) Wedekind, Richard Henicle, Tom Henicle, Mike Henicle, and Patti Henicle; numerous nieces, nephews and a large circle of extended family.

The family would like to extend their gratitude for the invaluable care he received from his homecare nurse, Christine, the Johns Hopkins Oncology care team; the infusion center nurses at Wellspan Waynesboro and Chambersburg Hospitals and the hospital staff who attended to him at Waynesboro Hospital as well as the hospice care team.

A Celebration of Life will be held on his birthday with family and friends.

Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is assisting with the arrangements.
