Mr. Richard H. Downin, 77, of Mont Alto, PA, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2026 in WellSpan York Hospital after a long illness.

Born November 27, 1948 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Paul N., Sr. and Minnie R. (Ebersole) Downin.

He was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and served his country honorably in the United States Army. He served from 1968-1971 where he worked as mail clerk, in the mess hall and was stationed in Okinawa.

He and his wife, the late Mrs. Debra J. (Kerlin) Downin, were married June 23, 1973. They were together for 45 years when she passed away April 11, 2018.

Mr. Downin was a dedicated employee of D.M. Bowman Trucking. In 2002 he was recognized for logging 1.8 million accident-free miles over 23 years and was awarded Maryland’s Truck Driver of the Year for his safe driving. He retired in 2015 after more than 40 years of service.

He enjoyed mowing grass and caring for his yard, often taking care of his daughter’s. He also like working with his hands, building and fixing things even if they weren’t broke.

He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Runyon and Jessica Downin, both of Mont Alto; two grandchildren, Emily Stambaugh and Kaden “Tommy” Downin; five siblings, Paul Downin, Jr., Kaye George, Cindy Gibbons, Kimberly Bowersox and Jeffrey Downin; and a number of nieces and nephews as well as a host of extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his stillborn grandson, Baby Jace Downin; one brother, Kenneth Downin; and three sisters, Teresa Kauffman, Donna Crowe and Judy Downin-Baker.

Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to: Victory House, an organization supporting homeless veterans, 131 E. McKinley St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, PA is handling the arrangements.
