Rev. Hubert Stanley “Pete” Wood, Jr., 91, of Middletown, died Sunday morning, November 9, 2014, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village, Boonsboro. He was the husband of Constance Elizabeth Stapleton, his wife of 16 years.

Born February 15, 1923, in Utica, New York, he was the son of the late Rev. Hubert S. Wood and Marion Rowan Wood.

He graduated from Choate School of Wallingford, Connecticut, in 1941; Yale University in 1945; the General Theological Seminary of New York City; received his Master of Divinity from Philadelphia Divinity School.

Rev. Wood served several churches in Terre Haute, Indiana, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Central New York. His last parish was All Saints’ Church, Johnson City, New York.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Sharpsburg.

Rev. Wood was active with many civic organizations and committees within the Diocese of Central New York; was Chairman of Diocesan Migrant Committee; Chairman of Seneca County’s Chapter of the American Red Cross and Mental Health Association; and served as Director of the Waterloo Library and Historical Society.

He participated in the Civil Rights March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

Additionally, Rev. Wood was a Life Member of the American Philatelic Society; and Trout Unlimited, Middletown. He also served as Director of the Western Maryland Heritage League. Consequently, he conducted many weddings in Dahlgren Chapel, owned by the League.

He is survived by two sons, David Stuart Wood of Silver Spring, and Richard Sands Wood of Dover, Massachusetts; five step-children; granddaughters, Catherine Morris Wood, Laura Dillenbeck Wood, Julia Sands Wood, Margaret Forsyth Wood, and Abigail Hubbell Wood; and five step-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Rev. Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Martha Morris Hubbell, who died in 1996; as well as his sister, Anne DeWolfe.

The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is handling the arrangements. There will not be visiting at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 15, 11:00 AM, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 209 West Main Street, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Mark S. Wastler will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM on Saturday morning. Interment will be in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, St. James, New York.
