Mr. Raymond George Ambrose, 89, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, February 3, 2015, in Falling Waters, West Virginia. He was the husband of Mrs. Josephine Clara Gordon Ambrose, who preceded him in death on July 4, 2004.

Born May 26, 1925, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Russell Witmer Sr. and Mary Grace Clopper Ambrose.

He graduated with the Class of 1943 from Hagerstown High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy on the USS Cuttlefish.

Mr. Ambrose was employed with the Hagerstown City Police Department and consequently a member of the Thomas Pangborn Lodge 88, Fraternal Order of Police.

Additionally, he was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378, W.D. Byron Post 1936, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, as well as the 69-year member of World War II Last Man’s Club, all of Hagerstown; and the Conococheague and Western Maryland Sportsmen’s clubs.

Surviving is his grandson, Robert L. Tagg and wife, Tammy, of Hagerstown; his great-grandsons, Adam T. and Aaron R. Tagg; and two nephews, Russell W. Ambrose III and John C. Ambrose.

Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Ambrose was preceded in death by his daughter, Yolanda L. Ambrose Tagg; and brother Russell W. Ambrose Jr.

The family will receive friends at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam St., Hagerstown, on Thursday evening, February 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday, February 6, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate. Interment will follow in Broadfording Cemetery, Hagerstown, with military honors provided by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown.
