Mrs. Mildred L. “Millie” (McSherry) McCleary, 94, a resident of Quincy Village and formerly of Waynesboro, PA, passed away Saturday morning, April 27, 2024.

Born February 19, 1930 in Gettysburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Robert P. and Anna Grace (Rickrode) McSherry.

Mrs. McCleary graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, Hagerstown, MD with the Class of 1948.

She and her husband, the late John F. McCleary, were married on July 31, 1948 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hagerstown. Mr. McCleary died on January 5, 2014.

She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where she was a member of the Sewing Belles and help to produce hundreds of “crazy quilts”. She was also a charter member of the Jaycees and the Kitchenaires, where she was the author of the opening number. She was a member of the National AARP and South Chapter #2977 AARP, where she served as corresponding secretary and treasurer and served on the board of directors.

Mrs. McCleary was a published poet, a Girl Scout Leader and was a mentor for Third Grade Students at Fairview Elementary School.

She is survived by three daughters, Debbie Licklider of Stephens City, VA, Joani Hartman of Germantown, MD and Tami Bitner of Hummelstown, PA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia L. “Cindy” Smith; one sister, Darlene Hoover; and one brother, Dr. Glenn Fancy.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in The Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church Street, Waynesboro with Pastor Drahus Oslik officiating. Burial will be private in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends following the services, Tuesday morning, in the church.
