Max Johnson, 90, of Chambersburg, PA, died at the home of his daughter in Upper Black Eddy, PA, on the morning of Sunday, August 4th, 2024. He resided with his daughter and her family in Upper Black Eddy for the past 18 months, but continued to visit Chambersburg regularly. He was married to his loving wife, Shelby (Woodward) Johnson, who preceded him in death in January of 2023, for over 60 years. Born June 26th, 1934, in Shade Gap, PA, he was the son of the late Bruce and Mary (DeShong) Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the Army as a young man and served with the Army Reserves for an additional 20 years. He was employed as a mechanic for many years at Letterkenny Army Depot. After retirement, her returned to the Depot to work in the recycling department. Mr. Johnson was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Amvets and Marine Crops. He had a passion for collecting and repairing cars, especially Volkswagens. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, country music, playing cards with friends, and sharing drinks with friends at the Legion. Mr. Johnson is survived by his daughter Diane Johnson Marshall and husband Blair of Upper Black Eddy; grandson Noah D. Marshall, of Pittsburgh; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Arnold Johnson, in 1986; A brother Wayne in 2008 & his wife Wanida in 2016; A sister Betty Wenger in 2019 & her husband Leroy in 2014; A brother Guy in 2024 and a sister Beaty Brown in 2021. A funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be held on Friday, August 16th at Mt. Olivet United Brethren Church at 11 AM with Pastor Stanley McCammon officiating. A time of visitation will be held beginning two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow at the St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Johnson’s memory to either the Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, 8204 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania 17202; or to Upper Tinicum Lutheran Church, PO Box 166, Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania 18972.
